Tommy Gotsch, Kevin Robson, Zach Donaldson, Brandon Spangler, and Will Cannon all enjoyed multi-hit games as Marquette completed the season sweep of River Forest Wednesday evening in Hobart, defeating the Ingots 10-8.
The Blazers threw up a five-spot in their half of the second to break a scoreless tie.
Donaldson sent a 3-0 offering into center that scored Spangler, who had reached earlier in the inning on an infield single. Robson kept the line moving with an RBI single to make it 2-0. Gotsch delivered the big blow with a bases-clearing triple to center to push the lead to 5-0.
River Forest took advantage of a pair of MQT miscues to push across single tallies in the second and third innings.
The Blazers got one of those runs back in the top of the fourth when Donaldson raced home on a passed ball. Marquette led 6-2 after four innings.
River Forest temporarily took the lead following a five-run frame of its own. MQT starter Connor Donaldson retired the leadoff man in the home half of the fifth, but the next six batters reached – two by virtue of errors – as the Ingots snagged a 7-6 lead.
Marquette answered right back in its next at-bat, though.
Gotsch, who reached via a one-out single, came all the way around to score on a Liam Dietz double to center to tie up at 7-7. MQT took the lead for good on an infield error that allowed Dietz to scamper home. An RBI single courtesy of Cannon provided the Blazers with an insurance tally.
Bardol, who took over on the hill for Connor Donaldson with one out in the fifth, earned the win. While seven runs scored on Donaldson’s watch, none were earned. Bardol punched out two batters in 2 2/3 innings of work.
MQT (3-7, 2-4 GSSC) will return home to host Bishop Noll in a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 9 am CT.
