Marquette Catholic High School
Wheeler High School
A program that achieved numerous records and superlatives saw its 2017 campaign come to a close Saturday afternoon in the IHSAA Sectional 33 Championship game at Wheeler High School in Valparaiso.
The top-ranked Bearcats put two on the board before senior Stacey Barron sliced the deficit in half with a header at the top of the box that trickled into the back of the net following a collision with the Wheeler keeper. Claire Salyer earned the assist on Barron’s 43rd goal of the season.
Wheeler got that goal back just minutes later and led 3-1 at halftime.
Marquette (15-4) kept it a two-goal contest until deep into the second half when the Bearcats added four goals in the final dozen minutes.
Senior Nadia Flores made two saves in the first twenty minutes; classmate Amani Corral accumulated seven over the final sixty.
Barron graduates with the program record for both season (43) and career goals (104). Senior Michaela Jennings finished 2017 with 22 assists, the most ever by a Blazer in one season. Salyer was right on her tail with 20 (second-most), seven of which came in the postseason.
Marquette bids farewell to eight seniors: Barron, Jennings, Flores, Corral, Mackenzie Bardol, Leslie Reyes, Paiton Downs, and Caitlyn Medley.
