Marquette Catholic may not have its own cross country course, but sophomore standout Jake Tarnow is finding himself at home at the New Prairie Course in New Carlisle.
This past Saturday, Tarnow completed his third race at the course the season when he covered the 5k track in 17:27.2 to advance out of the IHSAA New Prairie Sectional as an individual qualifier.
Coincidentally, New Prairie also hosts the IHSAA Regionals. And, if he continues his ascent up the leaderboard, he’ll take to the same course for the fifth time in semi-state competition.
Tarnow, who is competing in his second regional in as many years, crossed the line at 17:11.8 back on September 16th at the popular New Prairie Invitational. He earned a fifth-place finish in the process, tops amongst all underclassmen.
Postseason success is nothing new to the sophomore.
As a freshman last season, Tarnow progressed out of the 2016 IHSAA Chesterton Sectional following a 17:44 result at Sunset Hill Farm in Valparaiso. He shed six seconds off his time the subsequent Saturday at the IHSAA New Prairie Regional (17:38), falling 14 seconds shy of a semi-state bid.
If 17:24 remains the threshold to advance this Saturday, Tarnow will be flirting with a semi-state bid – and a fifth race at New Prairie – based on this past September’s results.
Saturday’s regional meet begins at 11:00 am ET/10:00 am CT.
