When seniors Emma and Sophia Nolan walked off the court at Bankers Life Fieldhouse with the Class A trophy on February 23rd, it’s unknown whether Marquette’s dynamic duo thought it would be their final game on that floor. Thursday’s unveiling of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA)’s Indiana All-Star squad meant it wasn’t.
The Nolan sisters were elected to Indiana high school basketball’s most prestigious list following senior campaigns that culminated in Marquette’s second straight state title.
Emma averaged 19.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.4 steals, and 1.9 blocks for the Lady Blazers this past year. She led the club in every offensive statistical category with the exception of assists. Emma shot 49% from the field and notched her second consecutive season of 200 field goals or more this past February.
Last season, Emma was named an Indiana Junior All-Star, graced the IBCA All-State Supreme 15 team, and earned Associated Press All-State High Honorable Mention accolades after averaging 20.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 2.0 steals for Marquette in its first state championship season.
For her career, Emma Nolan compiled a school-record 1,969 points and established program watermarks in rebounding (911), steals (250), and blocked shots (228). She scored in double figures in 96 of her 110 career games in a Blazer uniform, a span in which Marquette tabulated a 99-13 four-year record.
Sophia Nolan posted 17.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists, and 1.8 steals in 2018-19. She led the Lady Blazers in scoring 12 times this year, including the team’s semistate and state championship tilts in which she tallied a game-high 26 points in each.
As a junior, Sophia was also voted an Indiana Junior All-Star and received Associated Press All-State High Honorable Mention honors. She was a member of the IBCA Underclass All-State squad.
She shares an Indiana high school girls basketball state record for career games played with 112 alongside teammates Emmery Joseph and Morgan Crook. Over those 112 contests, Sophia accumulated 1,964 points, 800 rebounds, 251 assists, 220 steals, and 108 blocked shots.
A metronome of offensive production, she averaged points per game totals of 15.9, 18.2, 18.3, and 17.7 on field-goal shooting averages of 53.5%, 51.1%, 53.8%, and 51.0% across her four seasons. In total, Sophia finished in double figures 100 times.
The 6-foot-2 Nolans are just two of 13 players to represent the Hoosier State in the Indiana All-Stars vs. Kentucky All-Stars games slated for June. The Indiana All-Stars will play an exhibition game versus the Indiana Junior All-Stars on June 5th at a site to be determined before taking on the Kentucky All-Stars on June 7th at Bellarmine University in Louisville and June 8th at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.
With a potential fourth waiting in the wings, Emma and Sophia Nolan join Ryan Fazekas as the second and third basketball players in Marquette history to be selected as Indiana All-Stars. Fazekas was the school’s first in 2015.
Bound for Queens, New York, Emma and Sophia will join the St. John’s Red Storm of the BIG EAST in the fall. Before that happens, the Nolans will take to Bankers Life Fieldhouse one more time in an arena that has already provided so many memories.
