Solid pitching and flawless defense just weren’t enough for Marquette in its sectional opener Friday versus No. 7 Washington Township. Behind a complete-game effort from starter John Allen, the Blazers fell 3-0 to the host Senators.
WT used a two-out RBI single to break a scoreless tie in the top half of the second. It added two more in the fourth to make it 3-0. Allen evaded any further damage by stranding two in scoring position.
Marquette’s best scoring opportunity came in the sixth when senior Karsen Grott ripped a two-out double to left. Classmate Brandon Spangler followed with a base hit through the left side that sent Grott around third base. Grott was cut down at the plate, though, as the Senators executed the cutoff throw.
Sean Bardol reached with a one-out single in the seventh, but the Blazers were unable to bring the tying run to the plate.
Allen surrendered three runs on eleven hits across seven innings of work on the hill. He struck out two and walked just one, requiring only 94 pitches to navigate seven frames.
Junior Cormac Markham led Marquette with a 2-for-3 day in the batter’s box. Three of the Blazers’ five graduating seniors (Robert Barron, Grott, Spangler) recorded hits.
The 3-0 defeat signaled the conclusion of the 2019 season. Marquette congratulates Barron, Zach Donaldson, Grott, Jarett Piornack, and Spangler on their careers with the Blazers.
