Senior Brandon Spangler paced the Marquette offense with a three-hit day, but a four-run second inning propelled Culver Academies to a 6-4 win over the Blazers on Tuesday evening.
Spangler put Marquette on the scoreboard in the top of the first when he singled home sophomore John Allen. Allen reached base via his first of two HBPs before swiping second base to move into scoring position.
The Blazers struck again in the second thanks to some damage done with two outs. Cormack Bardol got aboard with an infield single. He was able to walk from first base to third when Cormac Markham drew a walk and Allen was hit yet again. Freshman Brady Thomas watched four straight balls go by to force Bardol in from third base and extend the lead to 2-0.
Culver posted four runs in the home half of the second to snag a lead it would not relinquish.
The deficit expanded to 6-2 before Marquette assembled another rally. Bardol and Markham worked walks in the top of the sixth ahead of Allen. The Blazer shortstop delivered a two-run double to center to make it a two-run tilt.
Marquette brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh, but was unable to break through.
The Blazers continue road play Wednesday afternoon when it visits Andrean at 5 pm.
