Sophomore John Allen reached base three times Friday night versus defending Class 2A state champion Boone Grove, but Marquette dropped a 5-0 contest to the Wolves in Valparaiso.
The Blazers fell behind 1-0 after one inning but assembled a threat in the third. After reaching via an error, Zach Donaldson advanced 90 feet from home on an infield single off the bat of Allen. Both runners were left stranded though when BG coaxed an inning-ending popout.
Boone Grove added an unearned run in the home half of the third to expand the lead to 2-0.
Donaldson and Allen ignited another scoring rally in the fifth. Donaldson drew a leadoff walk before Allen smacked an opposite-field single two batters later. With runners on the corners, senior Robert Barron worked a seven-pitch walk to load the bases. The Wolves walked away unscathed yet again after a 4-3 putout ended the visitor’s half.
Boone Grove tacked on three more insurance runs to claim a 5-0 home win.
Due to rain at its home fields, Marquette (4-8-1) was forced to cancel its Saturday doubleheader versus South Bend Adams. The Blazers will instead return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon at Victory Christian Academy. First pitch is set for 4:30 pm.
