Marquette collected its second win of the day Tuesday, topping Boone Grove on its home court, 58-56. The victory vaults the Blazers into the championship round of the Red & Blue Classic where they’ll face the host Hebron Hawks at 7 pm.
Sophomore Jason Kobe guided Marquette with 17 points. Junior Kaden Manna finished in double figures again with 15.
Manna, Kobe, Gary Lewis, and Connor Bakota all hit shots from downtown in the first quarter to help Marquette to a 19-16 advantage. Kobe and Lukas Balling recorded five points apiece in the opening frame.
Marquette’s defense, which held Winamac to a season-low 37 points in the early-afternoon tilt, surrendered just one field goal in the second quarter to expand its cushion to 29-19 at the break.
Junior Brit Harris tossed in five points of his own in the third quarter. Lewis added his second triple of the contest, but Boone Grove chipped away at the margin to trail 40-33 entering the fourth quarter.
The Wolves assembled a late 10-2 run to make things awfully interesting, but an eight-point period from Kobe and a seven-point stanza from Manna created enough separation.
Marquette (6-3) will take a three-game winning streak into Wednesday’s championship affair against Hebron (4-3). The Blazers and Hawks are slated to collide at 7 pm.
