Marquette’s vast depth was on full display Tuesday night in a potential Sectional 33 preview. All five starters finished in double figures, including sophomore Gary Lewis, who canned five treys as part of a game-high 20-point performance as the Blazers delivered a statement 82-62 win over Bowman Academy at the Scholl Center.
“We played more confident in the second half. We’re learning how to be really aggressive, yet still take good shots. We needed this more than they did,” head coach Ray Tarnow said.
Lewis recorded two of his threes in a tight, fast-paced opening quarter. Junior Brit Harris added six of his 15 points across the first eight minutes to help Marquette to a 17-16 edge.
Jevon France drained threes on back-to-back trips down the court to provide Bowman with a five-point cushion early in the second quarter. Lewis and fellow sophomore Jason Kobe answered with treys of their own less than a minute later to recapture a lead the Blazers would never relinquish.
Lewis and Harris had ten points each by the end of the half. Marquette led 30-28 at the break.
Lewis’s sharpshooting carried over into the third quarter as he drilled two more triples. Kobe and junior Kaden Manna both pitched in five points in the period. A quick 6-0 scoring surge extended Marquette’s lead to 12 points in the final minute before the Eagles received a three-pointer from Lamont Wilkerson at the horn to make it 52-43 entering the fourth.
Sophomore Lukas Balling spearheaded a 30-point fourth quarter that provided an exclamation point on the evening. He poured in 13 of his 17 points in the final frame. Manna joined his four comrades in double figures by the 6:59 mark of the fourth quarter. He finished with 15 while Kobe registered 13.
Bowman, which was without Koron Davis, was led in scoring by Judah Tolbert’s 18 points.
The victory marked the 10th in a row for the Blazers, a streak not achieved since 2014. Marquette amended that streak to 12 following its 70-66 overtime triumph in the 2013-14 IHSAA Class A State Finals. This squad can make it 11 consecutive Saturday afternoon at Calumet New Tech. Tip-off of the varsity contest is slated for 3:30 pm.
