Marquette collected its seventh win of the season at Thea Bowman Leadership Academy behind a pair of strong scoring efforts from senior Ally McConnell and junior Ryleigh Grott. The upperclassmen combined for 39 points in a 51-32 victory over the Eagles in Gary.
The game was slow to develop as missed layups and turnovers plagued both sides in the opening quarter. Marquette didn’t trail in the first period until a Faith Haggard basket with 10 seconds remaining.
Grott opened the scoring in the second quarter to seize a lead the Blazers would never relinquish. She accounted for 10 points by stanza’s end as McConnell pitched in four along with three rebounds, a steal, an assist, and a block.
The Blazers flipped a 9-8 deficit into a 21-15 advantage at the break.
McConnell erupted for a 10-point quarter of her own in the third to push Marquette’s lead to 15. She piloted a 12-3 rush which included a three from Riley Lindsey.
McConnell and Grott both scored six points in the final frame to put away a 51-32 win.
McConnell logged a game-high 21 points. It represented her fifth tilt of 20 or more points in her last seven. Grott, who entered the evening averaging a double-double, supplied 18 points.
The Blazers (7-9) return home to the Scholl Center Thursday evening where they’ll host La Lumiere at 7 pm.
