East Chicago Central defeated Marquette 76-58 Saturday afternoon at the Scholl Center. Senior Jake Tarnow scored a team-high 22 points while sophomore Britain Harris tallied 17 in support.
The Cardinals opened the tilt on an 8-0 run but both sides played evenly following that. Tarnow had six in the frame while freshman Lukas Balling canned a three.
A 22-4 run propelled EC Central to a lead it would not relinquish. Marquette recorded 11 of the final 13 points of the first half to move within 44-28 by the break.
Harris went off for nine points in a third period where the Blazers dominated. They sliced the deficit to as few as four and entered the final frame down 50-45.
Tarnow (6) and Balling (5) combined for 11 of their team’s 13 points in the fourth quarter, but the Cardinals expanded their lead as Marquette sent them to the free-throw line 23 times in the fourth quarter.
Harris accounted for four of the Blazers’ five treys on the day. Marquette shot 12-of-14 from the charity stripe as a team.
The Blazers return to the court Thursday evening when they welcome Bishop Noll to the Scholl Center for Senior Night. Marquette will honor its two seniors – Tarnow and Vaunte Johnson – prior to tip-off of the varsity contest which is slated for 7 pm.
