Facing a 3-0 deficit to visiting Victory Christian Academy, the Marquette girls soccer team mounted a spirited charge over the match’s final 20 minutes. A number of shots sailed high or wide before Riley Lindsey capitalized on a PK with 4:23 remaining. Unfortunately, that was all the Blazers were able to muster in a 3-1 setback at the Marquette Athletic Complex.
The Lions broke a scoreless tie in the 28th minute. The backbreaker came with 29.5 seconds left in the first half to nudge VCA ahead 2-0.
Victory Christian struck again three-and-a-half minutes into the second half to seize a 3-0 advantage.
The tide turned in the 60th minute when Marquette turned up the offensive pressure. The Blazers had a handful of opportunities just inside the box but were unable to direct enough on net.
Marquette was awarded a penalty kick in the 76th minute after VCA was whistled for a handball in its own box. Lindsey buried the PK for her third goal of the season.
The Lions held off the Blazers’ final push to hang on for a 3-1 win.
Sophomore Sydney Burroughs gathered nine saves for Marquette.
Senior Maddie Rowley led the Blazers with six shots on goal followed by Lindsey (3), Ana Blakely (2), and Yatziry Barrera Vazquez (2).
Marquette returns to the MAC pitch Wednesday evening to host Westville at 5 pm.
