Marquette led Morgan Township 4-2 with less than seven minutes remaining in Tuesday’s sectional opener at Wheeler High School, but the Lady Cherokees assembled a late comeback to overtake the Lady Blazers 5-4 in overtime.
Senior Claire Salyer sparked the Marquette offense with two goals, pushing her final season total to 21. Sophomore Riley Lindsey and senior Nathaly Reynaga accounted for the other two scores.
Facing a two-goal deficit, MT rattled off two goals in a 70-second span to tie the game at 4-4 with 5:18 left in regulation. The Lady Cherokees scored in the first overtime session, but despite numerous attempts throughout both periods, Marquette couldn’t find the equalizer.
The defeat signaled the end of the season for Marquette (4-10-1) and its eight seniors.
