Marquette struck first against Washington Township in Friday evening’s sectional showdown, but the Lady Senators rallied for a 4-1 victory at Westville High School.
Junior Sara Molina smacked two hits while fellow junior Ally McConnell walked, stole a base, and scored a run for the Lady Blazers.
Marquette took a 1-0 lead in the visitor’s half of the first thanks to aggressive baserunning by McConnell. The Lady Blazers’ leadoff batter walked before advancing into scoring position via a stolen base. McConnell came all the way around to score in the next at-bat when Mika Finney grounded out back to the pitchers’ circle. Finney was retired on the putout, but McConnell raced around third base and crossed the plate.
Washington Township erased the deficit and took the lead in the bottom of the first. The first tally came by virtue of an RBI single while the second scored on a passed ball.
An infield error in the second inning pushed the WT lead to 3-1.
The hole was 4-1 when Marquette brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh. Molina kickstarted the frame with a single to centerfield. An Isabela Pacheco double to center put two in scoring position for Emily Lasky, who represented the tying run. The Lady Senators escaped the jam, however, with a game-ending strikeout.
Senior Summer Johnson yielded two earned runs in six innings of work. Johnson punched out five batters opposite two walks in her final game in a Marquette uniform.
The Lady Blazers salute their six graduating seniors: Bri Moyer, Finney, Johnson, McKena Moore, Pacheco, and Jessica Pudlo.
