Sophomore Gary Lewis nailed four treys Tuesday night at Lake Central, but a frigid second quarter cost the Blazers in a 73-52 setback to the Indians.
Lewis led Marquette in scoring with 14 points while classmate Lukas Balling added 11 in the team’s road finale of the 2020-21 campaign.
A trio of triples sparked the Blazers to a pair of first-quarter leads. Lewis landed two while Balling banged in the other. Junior Kaden Manna chipped in four points before the Indians assembled a late rally to snag an 18-15 lead after a period.
Some nights the iron is unkind, but it turned downright nasty on Marquette in the second quarter. Junior Britain Harris got a runner in the lane to fall with 50 seconds remaining, a basket that represented the Blazers’ first – and only – field goal of the stanza. LC used that 15-3 run to extend its lead to 33-18 at the break.
Marquette was able to make a dent in the deficit in the third. Lewis and Balling both had five in the quarter. The Blazers, who received scoring contributions from six sources, shot 8-for-9 from the foul line to capitalize on early entry into the bonus.
Marquette shaved the lead to as few as eight, but Lake Central pulled away late to safeguard the win.
The Blazers return home Thursday evening to host Mishawaka Marian on Senior Night. Marquette will honor its lone graduating senior – Oz Brooks – prior to tip-off of the varsity contest which is scheduled for 6:30 pm. The JV affair will get underway at 5 pm.
