Sophomore Yatziry Barrera-Vazquez recorded her first career goal Thursday evening to open the scoring versus visiting River Forest. Junior Riley Lindsey followed with a hat trick and classmate Maddie Rowley added an insurance goal to nail down a 5-1 victory over the Ingots at the Marquette Athletic Complex.
Barrera-Vazquez opened the offensive splash in the ninth minute. Lindsey tallied her first of the evening just six-and-a-half minutes later.
River Forest cut the deficit in half with 23:00 to play in the first half. It remained a 2-1 contest at the break.
It was all Blazers in the second half as Lindsey, Rowley, and freshman keeper Sydney Burroughs secured the triumph with stellar play.
Lindsey found the back of the net less than three minutes into the second stanza. Rowley converted a penalty kick at the 30:32 mark before Lindsey collected the hat trick with a little more than 17 minutes left in regulation.
Burroughs was a wall down the stretch for the Blazers, registering 12 of her 15 saves after halftime, a span where River Forest saw most of its scoring opportunities.
Marquette (1-3) returns to the road next Tuesday when Wheeler welcomes the Blazers to Valparaiso. The match is the back-end of a boys/girls doubleheader with Wheeler. The boys’ match begins at 5:30 pm with the girls’ tilt to follow.
