Another dominating defensive performance coupled with a trio of players scoring in double figures allowed Marquette to coast to a 63-40 triumph over host Hebron in the title tilt of the Red & Blue Classic Wednesday evening.
Juniors Kaden Manna and Brit Harris marshaled the Blazers in the scoring department with 16 points each. Sophomore Jason Kobe mixed in 12 while classmate Brandon Welch added eight points – all in the first half.
As has been a consistent theme through the team’s first 10 games, Marquette received balanced scoring contributions in the opening half. Five players accounted for six Blazer buckets in the first quarter.
Marquette’s 14-9 first-quarter lead swelled to 26-19 at the intermission. Welch hit his second trey of the night in that second quarter while the Blazers held the Hawks to three field goals in the period.
Manna and Harris dropped in seven points in the third stanza while Kobe threw in six as Marquette pulled away for good.
The Blazers never wavered on the defensive side of the ball in Wednesday’s title contest. The club held two of its three Red & Blue Classic opponents to 40 or fewer points.
Wednesday represented Marquette’s sixth consecutive victory overall. The Blazers will take a 7-3 record into the new year when they’ll host Goshen on Tuesday at 6 pm.
