Marquette coupled a strong defensive effort with a seven-sided scoring attack to register a 55-50 win over Victory Christian Academy Tuesday night at the Scholl Center.
All five Blazer starters made their way into the scoring column in the opening period. Sophomore Lukas Balling posted six points in the paint while classmate Gary Lewis hit his first of three first-half treys. Marquette led 16-11 after eight minutes.
Lewis splashed two triples in the second quarter to notch 10 points by the break. Sophomore Jason Kobe added seven in the frame as Marquette opened up a 31-19 halftime lead.
Marquette leaned on balanced scoring again in the third quarter as five players recorded points.
VCA chipped away at a nine-point, fourth-quarter deficit thanks in large part to a full-court press that yielded a handful of steals. The Lions made it a two-point game with a minute remaining in regulation, but Marquette took care of the basketball down the stretch and made its free throws (6-for-8).
Lewis led the Blazers in scoring with 16 points while Kobe joined him in double figures with 12. Balling and junior Brit Harris logged eight apiece, and junior Kaden Manna posted seven points and 14 rebounds.
Marquette (3-3) travels to Gary on Thursday evening to take on Lighthouse College Prep Academy. JV will get underway at 5:30 pm with varsity slated to follow at 7 pm.
