Senior Izabel Galindo went off for a career-high 20 points while freshman Shena Fleming and sophomore Ruth Bean both scored in double figures in a 58-51 victory over Calumet Wednesday evening at the Scholl Center.
The Blazers benefited from perfect 6-for-6 free-throw shooting during the first quarter to spring out to a 13-10 lead. Sophomore Addison Johnson led Marquette in scoring with four points across the first eight minutes.
Marquette received a spark from Bean in the second quarter. She hit a trey and added another basket to record seven points by halftime. Fleming and Galindo accounted for the other four field goals in the period as Marquette led 27-22 at halftime.
The Blazers managed to retain a two-possession lead throughout a high-scoring third quarter. Fleming had eight in the stanza with Galindo adding four more.
Marquette began to pull away midway through the final frame, but Calumet assembled a late run to bring it to 53-51 with a minute-and-a-half remaining in regulation. The Blazers took care of the basketball when they needed to and Galindo provided insurance with 10 fourth-quarter points, including a 4-for-4 mark down the stretch, to preserve the 58-51 win.
Fleming finished with 14 points while Bean had 11. Galindo’s 20 points were a career best.
Marquette (6-5) hits the road Saturday when it visits Mishawaka Marian. The Blazers and Knights will tip-off a JV contest at 12 pm ET/11 am CT that will feature two quarters. The varsity affair will get underway afterward.
