Senior Ally McConnell led all scorers with 16 points as the Blazers held visiting Gary West Side to just nine field goals in a 39-32 triumph Thursday night at the Scholl Center.
McConnell accounted for six while junior Izabel Galindo recorded five points in a first quarter that saw Marquette seize a 13-4 cushion.
Junior Ryleigh Grott had four of her 12 points in the second quarter as the lead expanded to 22-12 at halftime. The Blazers appeared destined to go into the locker room with a 19-12 edge until McConnell hit a buzzer-beater from the top of the key to push the lead into double figures.
Sophomore Ana Blakely scored all six of her points in the second half to help fend off a late Cougar push. Marquette did a satisfactory job against the Gary West Side press down the stretch to hang on for a 39-32 win.
Thursday evening was the fifth time both McConnell and Grott have finished in double figures. McConnell is averaging 14.5 points per game while Grott owns a 12.2 PPG mark.
Marquette (3-3) will have a week off before returning to action in a girls/boys doubleheader at Michigan City. The Blazers and Wolves will tangle next Saturday at 5:30 pm with the boys game to follow.
