Facing a 0-0 stalemate with under 15 minutes to play in its sectional opener, Marquette’s offense began pounding on the door. Prime scoring opportunities in the 66th, 67th, and 68th minutes went for naught, but a Riley Lindsey rebound in the 73rd minute at last ruptured the floodgates in a 2-0 triumph over Westville at Kouts High School Monday afternoon.
The win launched the Blazers into the Sectional 34 semifinals on Wednesday.
Lindsey’s goal with 7:29 left in regulation came as a result of.a scrum following a Maddie Rowley-initiated free kick. After a handful of scoring chances eluded her, junior Ana Blakely found the back of the net with 42 seconds remaining to provide Marquette an insurance tally.
Sophomore Sydney Burroughs earned the shutout thanks to her six saves.
Marquette will learn its semifinal opponent tomorrow. The Blazers will face the winner of Tuesday’s Morgan Township/Kouts tilt on Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 pm.
