Fresh off their second pause of the 2020-2021 season, the Marquette girls basketball team hung on for a 46-36 triumph over Gary West Friday evening at the Scholl Center.
Senior Ryleigh Grott coupled eight rebounds with a game-high 13 points. Freshman Shena Fleming delivered a pair of clutch second-half threes en route to an 11-point, four-assist performance. Sophomore Ruth Bean provided 10 points off the bench and junior Ana Blakely preserved through leg cramps to finish a free-throw of scoring in double figures.
Fleming fed Grott for a layup on the right block on Marquette’s first possession of the ballgame. The Blazers had several decent looks over the next four minutes, but couldn’t buy a basket as the Cougars embarked on a 7-0 run. Blakely snapped the cold spell with a pair of baskets and Fleming drilled a corner trey to close the quarter on a 9-0 blitz.
The Blazer run extended to 13-2 in the second quarter. Blakely led Marquette in scoring at the half with eight points as it led Gary West 22-15 at the intermission.
The Cougars assembled a strong third quarter, outscoring Marquette 17-11. Gary West wrestled away the lead for a little more than 10 seconds before Grott scored on a fast break to take it right back. Fleming nailed a triple from the point as part of a four-point trip down the court to swell the Marquette cushion back to six. Grott had six of her 13 points in the third period.
The fourth quarter commenced with the Blazers leading 33-32. Fleming and Bean (3-4 FT) scored five points apiece in the final frame while Grott added three more points to her stat sheet to preserve a 46-36 victory.
For Marquette, the win was the team’s third straight at home and the fifth in its last six tilts at the Scholl Center.
The Blazers (7-5) have less than 18 hours before they return to the Scholl Center court. Portage Christian comes to town for a 12 pm tip-off.
