Victory Christian Academy built up just enough of an early lead to survive a third-quarter surge from Marquette Tuesday night at the Scholl Center. The visiting Lions hung on for a 54-48 win versus the Blazers.
Senior Ally McConnell erupted for 24 points in her return to the starting lineup. Sophomore point guard Ana Blakely was solid in support, accounting for 14 points of her own.
With junior Ryleigh Grott, the team’s leading rebounder, out due to an injury, VCA capitalized on the offensive boards and parlayed a multitude of second-chance points into a 34-21 lead at halftime.
Marquette opened the third quarter by assembling its strongest stretch of basketball.
Thanks to nine points from McConnell and four from Blakely, the Blazers shrunk the deficit from 13 points to one at the 3:00 mark. However, the Lions answered with a short scoring run of their own to regain a three-possession cushion.
Blakely’s six fourth-quarter points led Marquette, but they were unable to get within one score again.
Marquette (4-7) will return to action on Wednesday, January 8th at Calumet New Tech.
